Here are some VERY general fish limits (subject to change):
Halibut: Generally 2 per day/2 in possession in Cook Inlet or Prince William Sound. Guided Halibut fishing is closed on Wednesdays starting in the 2016 season, and there are size restrictions in place. Check ADF&G regulations or discuss in advance with your charter operator.
King (Chinook) Salmon: Generally 1 per day/ 1 in possession, total of 5 per season, of which 2 can be from the Kenai River and the remainder from other waters. A King Salmon Stamp issued by ADF&G is required for all King Salmon fishing.
Red (Sockeye) Salmon: Generally 3 per day/3 in possession, no season limit. When the run is strong the limit usually increases to 6 per day.
Silver (Coho) Salmon: Generally 2 per day/2 in possession in August, 3 per day/3 in possession September-November. No season limit.
Rainbow Trout: This varies widely by area, even within the Kenai River there are different regulations depending on your location. At our location, the limit is 1 per day and you can only retain fish under 18 inches, but other parts of the Kenai River have different (generally more restrictive) regulations.
Dolly Varden (Char): Generally the same as Rainbow Trout, but check your regulations.
Saltwater King Salmon: 1 per day/1 in possession. Season limit applies same as freshwater depending on when and where fish. Study regs on this before you go!
In addition to bag limits, you MUST be aware of regulations regarding use of bait (restricted by area, species, and run timing), regulations regarding hook size and type, and even regulations regarding the position of trout beads.
Know before you go!
King Salmon Stamp: Required for anyone who fishes for anadromous king salmon except for residents and nonresidents under the age of 16 and persons who have these license types: resident blind fishing license, resident low income license, resident 60 years of age or older permanent identification card license, and a resident disabled Veteran’s license.
