Some years they come thick for days, some years not at all. For 2018 we saw two days of a thick black line of Hooligan (smelt) running and bubbling right along the Kenai River shore so close you could catch them by hand — a net wasn’t even really sporting!  We smoked some, cooked some on the fire, and enjoyed just enough to tide us over until the salmon follow upstream.  Summer is just around the corner now.
