Ahoy from the lower Kenai River, mile 17, where Taylor just landed our 1st Sockeye (Red Salmon) of the season from shore! Just after some guests arrived from Tennessee, he decided to do a demo and test out his new Okuma pole and Abu Garcia C3 6501 to christen it for the season. In less than 5 casts he had a hookup with a Sockeye springing out of the water right in front of the Tennessee family on the dock! What a quick demo that turned out to be. While I scrambled for the net and called for brother CJ to be photog, the Sockeye slipped the hook and swam free. It all happened too fast. Undefeated, TJ (Taylor) cast his line again, and in less than 5 casts he had another one on and this one stuck! He guided it to the net expertly, enjoying the control his new rod & reel offered, while I attempted to video with one hand and net the salmon with the other as it swam into the calm eddy just downstream. Success! Sashimi is in the freezer curing, smoked salmon brine is ready to start, and two nice long boneless top sirloin tail sections (his favorite) will get blackened tonight! Summer is here at last, and TJ is now 2 up on Reds ahead of everyone else in the family. Nice work!
