It’s been a long winter, spring has past, summer solstice has wained….and at last the second run of Sockeye (Red) Salmon have arrived on the Lower Kenai River!  Keeping with my 15 year long tradition of catching one on July the first, I stepped down the bank at 0900 this morning after a cup of joe for a few test casts. I buzzed my Cindy on the cell phone to put in my vote for breakfast, while continuing my Kenai flip-cast, and WHAM a shiny sockeye hit one of TJ & CJ’s custom tied “Salmon Stryker” flies!  Thankfully, the twins were just en route to the river on the 4-wheeler and saw my pole bent so they scrambled to grab the net and roll video!  It’s the first Red I’ve heard of anyone catching in our neighborhood, and the first of nearly a million on the way we hope! Our friends from Georgia were just getting ready to depart, so they got a look at this beautiful fish and promised to return soon! Summertime in Alaska, fishin’ everyday, from now till the salmon all spawn!
