It’s been a long winter, spring has past, summer solstice has wained….and at last the second run of Sockeye (Red) Salmon have arrived on the Lower Kenai River! Keeping with my 15 year long tradition of catching one on July the first, I stepped down the bank at 0900 this morning after a cup of joe for a few test casts. I buzzed my Cindy on the cell phone to put in my vote for breakfast, while continuing my Kenai flip-cast, and WHAM a shiny sockeye hit one of TJ & CJ’s custom tied “Salmon Stryker” flies! Thankfully, the twins were just en route to the river on the 4-wheeler and saw my pole bent so they scrambled to grab the net and roll video! It’s the first Red I’ve heard of anyone catching in our neighborhood, and the first of nearly a million on the way we hope! Our friends from Georgia were just getting ready to depart, so they got a look at this beautiful fish and promised to return soon! Summertime in Alaska, fishin’ everyday, from now till the salmon all spawn!

About the Author: The Alaska Dream
Our family of six has been living the Alaska Dream on the world famous Kenai River for the past 15+ years, enjoying the bounty of the land & sea in everything we do! All of our children were born in Alaska, and both of us have lived here for 30+ years. We love sharing the Alaska Dream with visitors from around the corner and around the world and we especially love to help families and children catch their 1st salmon, halibut or rainbow trout and learn how to care for it all the way through the process of cooking it in delicious gourmet Alaska fashion. Enjoy reading our Alaska Fishing Report, Cooking Alaska Fish & Game, Alaska Photo of the Week and other sections of our website The Alaska Dream and we hope to have the chance to help you experience YOUR Alaska Dream someday too!
