We meet a lot of families every summer here on the Kenai River, but some just seem like they were made for Alaska….and this fine family from Georgia is one of those in every way.  Never mind that they broke the record for getting from Georgia all the way to our place on the Kenai River in under a week with two of their young sons aboard a Class A motorhome, a drive that takes many visitors weeks. Now that they’re here they’re embracing every day like the miracle that Alaska is, and tonight their son Ethan, just 12 last week, enjoyed a little miracle of his own catching this beautiful 2nd run Sockeye Salmon while fishing with a Kwikfish Plug off our dock for the Sockeye’s big brother the King Salmon! We were just in the middle of a chat on the complexities of Alaskan fishing regulations when wham the rod went against the dock as line peeled off and Ethan grabbed the pole from the holder and set the hook like a rookie ball player smashing his first out-of-the-park home run!  The fight was on and we all thought it was a King right till the end when it surfaced and we netted it only to find out it was a huge Sockeye (Red) Salmon hooked squarely in the lower jaw on that big King plug!  Everyone joined Ethan in the celebration, Eli, Paul, Rita and our crew…savoring this sunset salmon that will feed this beautiful family for the next several days. Way to go Ethan! Your arms will rest well tonight…along with that big smile on your face!
