TJ & CJ made a good showing on their first boat fishing trip on the Kenai River for 2017.  After an early morning (0545) departure from our dock @ a crisp 35 degrees F, with dense fog rolling upriver taking visibility down to less than 25 yards, they fished patiently for several hours with faith that they’d find an early season Kenai River salmon to bring home to camp. By mid morning break, ashore for coffee, they hadn’t so much as had a strike, but that didn’t discourage them in the least!  Back on the boat, with the sun breaking through the fog, it wasn’t long till they’re fishing-faith paid off!  CJ was just putting his feet up and looking into the sunshine and away from his pole in the holder when he heard the drag go with a strong strike and saw his pole bend sharply.  He ripped the pole out of the holder, made a quick hook-set, and the fight was on!  It took several attempts to bring the fish to the net, but once in the net the careful measurement first seemed to say it was in the 36″ and under keeper King class, but a remeasure proved otherwise as this fish was pushing 38″ and would swim free in the end.  It’s all in good sport here on the Kenai, we want these fish to prosper and spawn the next generation of huge Kings our river is famous for.  And…the silver lining was that twin brother TJ hooked into a “keeper” Sockeye Salmon just minutes afterward, smaller in size, but hot on the grill feeding our hungry post-hiberation Alaskan clan! Thanks for showing us all proud boys!
