Okay, this was a first….a wonderful family arrived for a 2 night stay from Washington & Ohio & Wasilla, eager to fish and enjoy some quality family time away from the hustle & bustle of public camping and fishing areas on the Kenai River. They weren’t disappointed, our resort lived up to their expectations, and despite somewhat slow fishing they did catch a couple nice Sockeye — firsts for nurse Becky and young Garrett.  But, what was really unusual was the moment when Becky’s husband Steven was relaxing by the campfire with a cold Samuel Adam’s Boston Lager in the sunshine and found himself swallowing a live wasp that had landed in his beer!!!  Too late to cough it up, the wasp travelled down his throat, stinging him several times on the way down!  I guess the wasp was none too happy about his predicament, but poor Steven didn’t like what happened next either!  Even though he didn’t have an allergy to bees, he started to feel a bit woozy and had an uncomfortable feeling in his chest. His nurse-wife Becky quickly administered some Benadryl, but after 15 minutes or so where things didn’t get better but rather worse, I was called on to be the ambulance driver to get him to the hospital which is just 2 or 3 minutes from camp if you drive right.  I drove with haste, seeing that he was holding his constitution by a thread, and sure enough just after dropping him at the ER he tried to “unswallow” that wasp!  The Soldotna ER is particularly busy this time of year…so after nearly 2 hours of waiting for the Doc, by which time Steven was feeling better already, he asked if he could get out of his hospital get-up and ER bed and get back to fishing! The Doc finally came in and gave him the green light and back to the river they came. In the end, wife Becky and cousin Garrett would catch the only salmon, but a great time was had by all — despite the unexpected hospital tour.  Moral of the story?  Keep a lid on that beer or stick your thumb over the top to make sure you don’t get any extra protein when you pour it down the hatch!
